Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

This week’s Generation Gap is focused on one of the most famous cars worldwide: the venerable Ford Mustang. Long the halo of inexpensive performance, it has risen far past its Falcon origins to create the new segment of muscle cars that it leads today. The only question is, in its 50 years of production, which is your favorite example?

The options:

First Generation [1964 - 1973] and facelift

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Second Generation [1974 - 1978]

Third Generation [1979 - 1993] and facelift

I’m one of the few that love these “Clydesdales”.

Kinja'd!!!

Second place goes to the 79-93 Foxes.

I vote Mustang II as long as I can have one of these:

Honestly, I like the 6th generation the best. I really like the refinement of the new one. I almost view it as more of a grand tourer now.

5th gen. However I like the facelift. The Shelby of the era was very very cool. First Mustang to reach 200mph. And the Boss 302 of the era is my practical dream car.

I’ve warmed up to the drop tops over the years. The Grande? I have no love for it.

Agreed. Very Euro :) However, I can still appreciate the earlier ones as well, not only for historical value either...

Fine. It’s the only way to have a II.

I think the picture you posted really helps sell the GT image. If I couldn't have a 6th generation then I would choose a 1st gen.

Agreed again. The picture is off Wikipedia and I do love the web-like wheels on this example.

Third gen...does anybody call Foxes 3rd gens? It feels weird to me. Anyway, I’m a product of the 1980s and my first car was an ‘88 GT, so it’ll always be Fox body cars for me.

-_-

I have a distinct problem with the way these generations are generally split in that they completely disregard engine changes between ‘facelifts’. They weren’t just: “Oh, let’s adjust the design of the head flow a bit”; they were: “Here, this completely different block/fueling system makes 50-100 HP more, let’s put it in”.
My biggest gripe is the lack of separation of 2011-2014 Mustangs from the 2005-2009 models. Grar, my crotchetiness is showing. Really doesn’t matter.

If it were my own money, I’d have to get a brand new GT though I’d make a concession for any Mustang with a Boss badge on it...

Eww, who voted for the 2nd Gen?

Is there any way to have the poll where each person can rank the cars from best to worse? I think that would give more accurate data on the popularity. In this case I think it would mean the 4th Gen outranking the 2nd Gen as it damn well should.

The New Edge is better looking than the 2nd and 5th gens IMO, but I voted for the notchback fox.

Yep! I’m thinking Nissan Cima or Honda CR-V but anything that you suggest will be added to the bin...if you’re interested, I’m looking for cars with at least four separate generations and no more than 6-7 (otherwise it will be broken up into two weeks...)

I owned a 1st gen. Loved everything about it even though it was about 10 years old when I bought it. Still love it, in my memories, today.

Do like the 3rd generation. It gets a lot of hate but it is what is was. Strangled by EPA. But a nice looker, IMO.

I like to think of the First Gen ending in 1970 because I detest the 71-73 models (disclosure: owned ‘66 vert). So my redefinition of First Gen is my favorite. Next up is Fifth Gen, particularly after the facelift (disclosure: own ‘14 Roush S3). In third place is Third Gen, again particularly after facelift (disclosure: owned ‘93 GT vert). Sixth Gen is in fourth (I just don’t like the rear, and I think it makes the entire back part of the car look weird from any angle). Fourth Gen is in fifth. And second generation finds itself in sixth place (disclosure: owned a 4-cyl and a v6 in high school — just awful cars, although I did have some fun in the 6). Finally, those abominations from 71-73 are in last place. (And apologies in advance to those of you who love them.)

Ranked:

(best to worst)

1st gen: Everything basically done right.

6th gen: Possibly better than the 1st gen, but much like music I require some aging before it can be a favorite.

2nd gen: Can look phenomenal, but the rest is pretty bad. I would love to buy a cheap gen II and restomod it with a LS or Coyote.

5th gen: Good numbers, but a damn boat and some of the tech is OLD...

4th gen: Ugly, slow (A Civic Si puts out almost the same power ;) ). My least favorite by far, although on paper I love the idea.A notchback small and light big engine car. I also don’t care for the Sedan version of this car, the Tempo.
